PEDICURE QUESTION & ANSWERS
Why does my polish last longer on my toenails?
Gel polish typically lasts longer on toenails than on fingernails because toenails experience far less daily wear and exposure. Fingernails are constantly used for activities such as typing, cleaning, opening containers, washing hands, and exposure to water, oils, and chemicals, all of which can weaken the bond of the gel product over time.
Toenails, on the other hand, grow more slowly and are generally protected inside footwear, resulting in less impact, moisture exposure, and physical stress. This allows gel polish on toes to maintain its adhesion, shine, and durability for a significantly longer period — often 4–8 weeks compared to 2–3 weeks on fingernails.
Why does a presoak not affect my toenail polish adhesion?
Toenails can still absorb water during a soak, which is why proper prep and dehydration are important before applying gel polish. However, even if some temporary swelling of the nail plate occurs, gel polish generally lasts longer on toes because toenails are exposed to far less daily stress than fingernails.
Fingernails repeatedly expand and contract throughout the day from constant hand washing, water exposure, cleaning products, oils, and physical impact. This continual movement and stress can weaken the gel bond and lead to lifting or chipping more quickly.
Toenails, by comparison, are thicker, grow more slowly, and experience much less flexing and environmental exposure after the service is completed. As long as the nails are thoroughly dried and properly prepped before application, the temporary moisture from a pedicure soak is usually not enough to significantly affect long-term adhesion.
